Santa Should See a Podiatrist

The night before Christmas, all through the North Pole,

Santa and his elves were on a toy-making roll!

They desperately needed to finish their toys right

So Santa could make his sleigh ride that night.

Those poor elves and Santa had been on their feet

For far too long, with a ticking clock to beat!

“Oh dear,” said Santa, starting to frown,

“I can’t wait ‘till I have time to just sit down.”

Okay, so that’s not at all how the classic poem goes, but for as much time as Santa and his elves must spend on their feet getting ready for Christmas, they probably could use a good podiatrist. Their jobs require many hours standing and walking. Over time, standing and walking can take a real toll on the lower limbs, leading to sore, painful feet that can make it difficult to keep working.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways Santa—and anyone else who isn’t a Jolly Old Elf—can take care of their working feet. If Santa came to our office, we might first recommend more supportive boots, or at least some good inserts or custom orthotics. This change can help provide extra cushioning and support, alleviating some pressure.

We may also suggest Santa take more breaks during the day to rest his feet, and do regular stretches and foot exercises. That will give his lower limbs more time to rest, loosen up tight tissues, and work to get stronger to support the strain they’re under. Unfortunately, while Santa’s big, jiggling belly is iconic, it’s not helping his poor, overworked feet. To really relieve his aches and pains, he might need to exercise for weight loss as well.

We may not see Santa come through our doors for a check-up—as much as his feet probably need it—but we do see plenty of others who are struggling with sore, overworked feet this holiday season.
